MEDIA, PA – Junio 27, 2025 – Yesterday, SEPTA’s board adopted a budget that will terminate half of its transit service and increase fares, due to the continued uncertainty around state support in the upcoming budget.

Senator Tim Kearney (D-Delaware) made the following statement in response to SEPTA’s recently adopted budget:

“The recent vote by the SEPTA Board to approve a budget that terminates half its services and raises fares is alarming and marks a breaking point that was foreshadowed by the agency months ago. Following SEPTA’s announcement of proposed cuts in Abril, my colleagues who represent the Southeast PA delegations and I collectively rallied, urging the legislature to allocate funding to stop the cuts from happening.  Now these cuts are no longer theoretical. They are real and will have real-life consequences for the hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians who rely on SEPTA to get to work, school, medical appointments, and more.

This is a direct consequence of the legislature’s failure, so far, to pass a timely budget that includes adequate transit funding.

A potential saving grace is we still have a small window of opportunity to stop this from happening. SEPTA’s board has said it can amend its budget if a state budget is reached soon. This legislature must act immediately to prevent the devastating effects that come with this approved budget and ensure that jobs are protected, and our economy isn’t adversely impacted by it.

This has never just been about Southeast Pennsylvania. If these service cuts and fare hikes take effect, it will negatively impact our entire Commonwealth’s economic health.

I am urging my colleagues and our leadership to treat this with the urgency it demands and pass a budget that saves public transit and Pennsylvania’s economy.”
