DELAWARE COUNTY, PA – ਸਤੰਬਰ 17, 2024 – Senator Tim Kearney (D-Delaware) and Representative Heather Boyd (D-Delaware) co-hosted the 5th Annual Senior Expo in partnership with Senior Community Services (SCS) on ਸਤੰਬਰ 12, at The Drexelbrook Catering & Event Center.
The event drew hundreds of seniors, their caregivers, and family members, offering them access to critical services, resources, and fun activities. This year’s expo was especially well-received, with attendees enjoying the expanded lineup of activities, including Zumba Gold and Chair Yoga sessions, which encouraged seniors to stay active and engaged.
The expo was sponsored by The Drexelbrook, PECO, The Foundation for Delaware County, and other generous community partners. In total, 70 vendors participated, providing attendees with valuable information, free or low-cost resources, and services tailored to seniors. Among the vendors was a representative from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department, who helped attendees locate over $54,000 in unclaimed property for themselves or their relatives.
“This expo is about more than just providing services—it’s about ensuring our seniors have direct access to the support they need to live healthy, independent lives,” said Senator Kearney. “It’s great to see so many people take advantage of the resources, and I’m especially proud that we were able to help locate thousands of dollars in unclaimed property for our residents, in addition to connecting seniors to services that actually matter to them and their caregivers.”
In addition to the wide variety of resources, guests were treated to live music by DJ Joe Foley, free refreshments, and the opportunity to win door prizes, including gift baskets, gift cards, and other merchandise donated by onsite vendors. Health services were a key part of the event, with Springfield Pharmacy offering flu vaccines to attendees, a service that Senator Kearney gladly took advantage of by receiving the latest COVID-19 vaccine on-site.
This year’s Senior Expo was praised for its diverse range of activities, which featured health screenings, including blood pressure checks, cognitive assessments, and strength and balance testing. The YMCA of Eastern Delaware County and Widener University contributed significantly to the wellness offerings, leading both Zumba and Chair Yoga classes. The addition of these fitness sessions added a new level of enthusiasm, promoting not just physical health but also social interaction. The expansion to services and activities during the event was embraced by Rose DiMascio and Frances Simcox—two seniors from Drexel Hill who have attended the Senior Expo together for several years.
“This year I thought was the best,” said DiMascio. “I loved the chair yoga and sat there to participate. I noticed the room was more spacious, and the aisles were wide enough for us to go down each one comfortably.”
“Frances and I come every year,” said Simcox. “We come for the vendors and to learn about the politicians who represent us and to meet our neighbors.”
Throughout the event, guests also had the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or expired medications at the Drug Take-Back Van, courtesy of the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. SEPTA Key Card sign-ups were another highlight, helping seniors aged 65 and over access free or reduced public transportation fares.
“SCS is proud to partner with Senator Tim Kearney and Rep. Heather Boyd on their annual Senior Expo,” said John Federico, Director of Advancement for Senior Community Services. “We appreciate the opportunity to introduce a sizable crowd of enthusiastic older adults to our mission, programs, and activities. We only have a few days each year where we get to be in the community with our constituents and potential visitors – and we appreciate everything the senator, representative, and their teams do to create a great event for us to return to year after year.”
The event concluded with a raffle of door prizes with guest anxiously waiting to hear their names called, many of whom expressed their gratitude for the variety of offerings and a chance to win free goodies.
“The Senior Expo is always an incredible opportunity to connect with our community and make sure our seniors are getting the care and information they deserve,” said Rep. Boyd. “It brightens my day to see their excitement, and this year’s turnout and response were fantastic. I’m thrilled we could expand our activities with Zumba and yoga to keep everyone active and engaged.”
The Senior Expo is a premier community event for both Senator Kearney and Rep. Boyd’s offices. Pre-planning for next year’s expo is already underway, with an anticipated date of ਸਤੰਬਰ 2025. Event details will be released to the public in Spring 2025.
