DESCRIPTION:Representative Gina H. Curry and I are proud to partner with the Red Cross for our first Sickle Cell Blood Drive. Blood donors who are Black play a vital role in supporting individuals with sickle cell disease\, which is the most common genetic blood disorder in the United States. \nOne in three African American blood donors are a match for people with sickle cell disease. Red blood cells carry markers called antigens on their surface that determine one’s blood type. There are more than 600 known antigens\, and some are unique to specific racial and ethnic groups. By donating blood\, you can make a difference in the life of a patient with sickle cell disease\, people with complicated childbirths\, individuals fighting cancer\, or trauma \nThe need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. DESCRIPTION:Senator John Kane and I will be hosting our annual Overdose Awareness Vigil at 7:00 p.m.\, on Thursday\, August 28\, in front of the Delaware County Courthouse in Media\, PA. \nThis year marks the fifth consecutive time that we’ve teamed up to raise awareness and combat the stigma surrounding overdoses. \nWe are inviting the entire community to come out and show support to family members and friends who have lost a loved one due to a drug-related death.   \nSeveral local organizations are confirmed to participate and will be onsite to provide substance-use disorder resources and other helpful information to those who may need it. \nDid You Know: \nAnnually\, August 31 is recognized as International Overdose Awareness Day and is a chance for the broader public to join in remembering and honoring the lives lost to overdose.  The day also aims to reduce the stigma associated with substance-related deaths.
